As a brand new concept in children's programs, we realize there may be some questions looming, so we thought we would tackle some of the most common questions here.
Q. What does green mean?
A. green \ˈgrēn\ adjective: relating to or being an environmentalist political movement b: concerned with or supporting environmentalism c: tending to preserve environmental quality (as by being recyclable, biodegradable, or nonpolluting)
Q. Do I have to "go green" to have my child participate in the playgroup?
A. Absolutely not! We welcome children and their caregivers of ALL lifestyles, green or not! It is our mission to ensure our playgroup provides a healthy, earth friendly program for kids to PLAY! at, with minimal impact on the environment.
Q. greenKidsPLAY! promotes a green approach to play, but what does this actually mean?
A. We not only do a TON of research to provide the most earth friendly toys, equipment, and supplies at our facility, we also have monthly green initiatives to promote green projects in the local community. Our list of green initiatives for this year include collecting used batteries to recycle, collecting children's DVDs to reuse by donating them to local children's hospitals, and collecting kids meal toys for donation around the holidays, just to name a few.
Q. Why is there such an emphasis on PLAY! in your program?
A. In contrast to passive entertainment, play builds active, healthy bodies. In fact, it has been suggested that encouraging unstructured play may be an exceptional way to increase physical activity levels in children, which is one important strategy in the resolution of the obesity epidemic. 18,19 Perhaps above all, play is a simple joy that is a cherished part of childhood. - American Academy of Pediatrics http://www.aap.org/pressroom/playFINAL.pdf
Q. Is this a preschool or am I able to attend the program with my child?
A. We are a Mommy & Me playgroup, and we welcome children to come with their parent, relative, or caregiver to experience the first taste of a social and educational environment. We introduce children to a loosely structured circle time and craft activity but do not enforce participation - if your child would prefer to spend the time exploring the room and observing from a distance that is learning too! We welcome siblings as well, and offer free membership to children under 12 months, and half price membership to children over 12 months but not the primary member registered for the playgroup.
